what is the pig project?
We're not farmers, we're not even smallholders really, we are just very lucky that the family house has a large garden, an orchard and a scrubland area suitable for pigs. There have been a dozen or so chickens and ducks living there happily for the past couple of years and the eggs they produce are amazing. Having our own pigs to rear for food is the next step, but it's all new to us, so everything that happens is part of the pig project.
All our latest stories are on our diary page, and there's more photos too.
Gary and Minty, our pigs.We all like eating pork and inspired by programmes like River Cottage, we're sure that the meat from our own pigs will be fantastically flavoursome. We did a fair bit of research before getting our pigs, but not everything was covered, so we hope that this site might answer a few questions and inspire other budding pig-owners to get trotters deep into getting some pigs.
However - everything on this site is just a record of what happened with our pigs and what we did, it doesn't mean its the best way to do it, (we're sure we'll learn a lot along the way!) but its the way we did it and that's all we can offer.
who we all are
Sam and Charlie. The pigs live with Sam and Charlie and Val and Bryan at their house. They also get a lot of care and attention from Abi and Ben, and Laura and Shane.
Their many friends in the garden include the ducks; Norbert, Delphine, Deirdre and Ian (who's a girl - that's another story), the chickens; Edith, Primrose, Pot, Cybil, Dolly, Sue-Ellen, Charlene, Crystal, Tigger, Vanilla-pod, the dogs; Dougal and Merlot, and Tisa the cat.
Their other friends, who don't live in the garden but visit a lot, include Callum and Fiona and Tim and Erin.
